THE SUPER KINGS OF TEST CRICKET
#1

When Sachin tapped the ball around his legs to register India’s first ever series sweep against the mighty Aussies, the debate that whether India is a worthy no: 1 will get faded out at least for a while. This team here has started to make winning a habit and to do that in front of 36000 people is a special achievement. It also underlines few things that Dhoni’s Devils are not going to bow down easily against any opposition. Just the way they won the first test with the help of an unlikely partnership between Laxman and Ishant showed that this Indian team is a bit different from the teams from the past we had seen so far.

Coming to Bengaluru Dhoni had a definite edge over his counterpart in terms of team morale and confidence. Ponting does not have deadly ammunitions in his artillery anymore and is not much a technical captain anyway. India had lost three of the more experienced players in Laxman, Gambhir and Ishant due to injuries. Murali Vijay and Debutant Cheteshwar Pujara came in place of Gambhir and Laxman while Sreesanth replaced Ishant in the eleven. Though Vijay had a fantastic IPL and Champions league he was yet to prove a mark at the top level. Pujara meanwhile had been knocking on the door of the team for the last 3-4 years but hardly had a vacancy to fill. But according to me the timing of his Debut is near perfect as he has amassed a mountain of runs in Domestic cricket averaging over 60. Sreesanth is widely considered to be the most gifted bowler in India but his on field antics had taken a front seat rather than his performance with the ball.
When M.S.Dhoni lost the toss for the 9th consecutive time, it meant only one thing that India had to bat last on a weary Chinnaswamy track. Watson and Katich started well for the visitors until the spinners struck just after the lunch removing both the openers. Ponting had averaged a mere 20 before this test series but he had also got a hundred at this very same ground years ago. He looked threatening to get to his 40th test ton in both the innings but fell in the 70’s on both occassions. Marcus North got an Ashes life line after he completed a spectacular ton which incidentally was his fifth overseas ton. Tim Paine will give Brad Haddin sleepless nights over the wicket keeper spot as the young kid from Tasmania continued his good form from Mohali. Ben Hilfenhaus gave it all in this test series, he is truly a world class bowler but was devoid of any luck during this series. Mitchell Johnson was terrific but could not do much in this track. Debutant Peter George also tried hard and this experience will only make him a better bowler. Nathan Hauritz was hugely disappointing considering he was Australia’s no:1 spinner in this tour. He could not do much on these wickets, even North looked more threatening than him. So next time you come here Ricky, make sure than you have a decent spinner on your ranks. Regarding India’s Bowlers, Ojha is a real find especially during a period when India is struggling to find good spinners in their arsenal. He out bowled Bhajji on many occasions and was the best bowler for India in this series. Harbhajan still have to get some of his confidence back and I still feel he is not performing to his potential. Zak has been superb especially with the reverse swinging balls. I don’t think there are many bowlers who can reverse the SG and Duke balls better than him. Sree has been wayward at times but produced unplayable deliveries here and there often. His spell along with Zaheer on the final day morning was outstanding. Batting had been India’s main strength for many years now and this series was no exception. Sachin, who is nearly completing 21 years in the international scenario was the top scorer for India in this series and also notched up his 6th career double ton in the second test. Laxman was cool as alps when India was down and out during the first test at Mohali. Sehwag sparkled like a chinese fire cracker but vanished too quickly from the scene. Rahul Dravid made a strong comeback after the dismal show in Sri Lanka although his deceptiveness to left armer’s out swinger is growing large by day, may be the wall have started to show some cracks. Raina played well both in Mohali and Bengaluru but need to learn to spend more time in the crease and don’t forget Yuvraj is just around the corner. Captain Marvel is usually a good bet behind the stumps but he made far too many errors behind the stumps during this series, his batting also lacked the usual flare.
The Kiwi’s are up next and as now would not pose much threat to India’s numero uno position. Moreover they were humiliated by the Bangla Tigers during the just concluded ODI series. It will be a shock if India fail to win that series and that too by a handsome margin. The one day series succeeding the test series will be the last opportunity for the home side to test its players before the all important world cup. For the moment let us just bask in the glory of this latest triumph and mind you nothing is sweeter than seeing Ponting’s dejected face after a loss. Gosh I hate these Aussies!!!. Hip Hip Hurray India…
